Satan's Bodyguards are game-breakers

No matter how well I'm doing, all it takes is one Satan's Bodyguard to ruin everything.  Once they get on screen they summon another, he summons another, and the next thing you know I'm surrounded on all sides by them.  Any attempt to get away just gives them all a free turn to shave off my hit points one-by-one and summon a couple more.

I've played roguelikes, I've beaten rogue and nethack multiple times each, and I've never seen as abruptly and relentlessly unbalanced a monster as this.

Yeah, they can really be troublesome.

But let's be honest, except for those bodyguards the game isn't as difficult as Nethack, Slash 'em and other classic roguelikes are. It's just that sudden spike of difficulty with handling bodyguards what stings people.

Classic roguelikes had a system where players were
challlenged how far can they come, but in 100 Rogues you can easily get
to Satan. There are so many people on online leaderbords with tons of
points… I wonder how they got 'em.

I suggest adding a cooldown, energy cost or limit on "calling backup" and stretch the game with more levels that are increasingly difficult. Maybe change the score formula a bit. Instead of just experience I think level progression should also affect the score.

Maybe increase penalty for starvation (starvation lowers strength, if your strenght reaches zero you die). It seems to me I have a lot of suggestions that might be radical and I might open a new topic for them. I really love this game and I wish I had a Mac so I could lend a hand.

Overall, skipping whatever I said and returning on topic: I suggest adding some sort of limit how many calls can an agent/satan bodyguard make. And keep on making more levels, of that I'm sure you already are! :)

You are correct, the challenge of other roguelikes is slightly different from 100 Rogues because most roguelikes do not have boss fights.  I don't think any 'added penalties' would be fun – it might in fact ruin the fun of most players.  They need to come up with something else to balance the game and part of that would be making the game longer and harder to reach Satan.  Remember, most roguelikes have 26+ levels… 100 Rogues has 12, and 3 of those are "boss" levels which are predesigned "set" levels.

I agree that Satan's Bodyguards are a problem – they're fixed on our side though, it'll be fixed with the next patch.  Sorry about that.  In the mean time, you can just run from them.

I've always found it handy to keep a distance weapon on hand with whatever rogue I'm playing specifically to deal with the yellow skeleton archers and Satan's bodyguards. Typically, those body guards attack the first and second turns they have- only then calling in backup. So, if you have at least a +2 Bow you can use it to kill 'em off before they have a chance to call backup. Even if they do manage to do so it typically is one to two more before I dispatch them all.

Maybe this will help folks out? The only enemies I can't stand are the laser-shooting floating heads and the Third Level of Hell knights. I'd rather run then deal with them.
