Healing necessary?

I feel like there's a problem with how mandatory healing is in the game.  It seems like the games in which I don't take heal as my first two skills are a lot more difficult, and then it means that it's a long while before I get anything else.

Maybe this will be alleviated when there's a better source of food, but for the crusader, who doesn't have an escape skill, that's not even a good solution. It's kind of doubly frustrating for the crusader at least for the fairy, your pre-req for heal is teleport, which is really useful. Faith combines not useful with not fun.

Or are other people getting by with skipping the heal spell?

Honestly when I first started playing 100 Rogues I thought healing was pretty necessary.  As I've gotten more in tune with the game, and learned a couple tactics, I'm taking the skill less and less.  To be honest I think my last 10 or so games I've not taken it, and the game in which I got to Satan I didn't take heal as a Crusader.

To fully answer your question…  You don't need to take heal at all.  Does it make the game a little more forgiving?  Well, yes, but that's what it's there for.  It's definitely not needed though.  Look at the other threads in this forum for more hints, but the biggest help I can give you is this; don't be afraid to pick up and throw everything you can think of at enemies.  Every HP or damage you deal before they can hit you gives you more of a chance of not losing anything.

I tend to agree. I have been playing Crusader exclusively to learn the ins and outs, and I have been staring with Searing Blade, and following it with Weapon Focus to get the bonus as quickly as possible. By the time I get my third point I either put it in Heavy Armaments if I have found a Tower Shield, or increase Searing (cost is same, but does 14 instead of 7). If I pump Searing, that's where point #4 goes as well. Otherwise I may take God and Healing, but they really seem like less bang for the buck.

Whack of Glory is ok as an escape route, but Martyrin and Holy Fires seem like wastes, personally. Anyone use them regularly?
