Anyone else have any quick tips to help out that player that might be new to the game?

1.) Know when to fight – sometimes its a better idea to run away so that you can survive in a room full of monsters.

2.) Try throwing different items – they can have some surprising effects.

3.) Don't waste food – its scarce enough as it is. Eating it is not smart if you are already pretty full.

4.) Take advantage of your ranged items / attacks – later in the game one wrong move can spell disaster pretty easily. Use your ranged items and attacks to help buy time or eliminate threats before they reach you.

5.) Use the enemies to your advantage – sometimes you can use a monster to block attacks from another. Some monsters even have attacks that do area of effect damage and can be used to hurt other monsters in the vicinity.

Very good tips.  Also, my good friend and colleague John Harris from @Play says that the main reason people die in Roguelikes is "a failure to recognize a critical moment".  This means, a failure to recognize that moment which, if you don't do something, you will be killed.  When you die, remember – there is always SOMETHING you could have done in 100 Rogues to have survived.

-it is generally best to fully explore every floor for the treasure chests that show up.

–said treasure chests only show up in open square rooms- not in corridors/tunnels.

-check your minimap frequently! many times the game will give you two different paths to the same room, and one will take more moves than the other. you can save some food if you pay attention to which way you take.

-the Crusader's Faith ability (God's finger) will either crush an enemy for 100hp or heal you to your max when you dip below 50% hp (this isn't a 100% chance or happening, though). It happens BEFORE anyone moves or attacks that round.

–> A good thing to keep in mind is that all those items you see laying around are very useful!  For your first couple bandit hole levels pick everything up and use it!  Got a dagger +5 and see three daggers laying around?  Pick them up and throw them at enemies!

–> If you find a bow (and are not trying to grind up focus levels on weapon) use it!  Bows are very powerful, and can let you take out many enemies before they can even touch you.  Arrows also have a pretty decent chance of falling on the ground when you use them, so even though you only have 20 actual arrows you probably have at least 30 shots.

–> If you decide to use weapon focus as the crusader pick a weapon and stick with it!  If you fully master a weapon it becomes deadly no matter what it is.  My best run was with a +5 mastered dagger.  I was backstabbing for 100+ damage.

–> Many people overlook the merits of magic resistance.  If you have the open slots in your inventory hold onto a magic shield/robes for dungeon levels that have a lot of gypsies/the Golden Genie/Satan.  Their magical attacks completely bypass your armor rating!

-Save at least 3 Unholy Fire Scrolls for when you fight Satan. I've only killed him twice but each time I did it was by only using Unholy Fire Scrolls. The first time it took 3 scrolls to kill him. The second time it only took 2.

-Save at least 1 point for Fairy Blessing if you are playing the Wizard. Two if you want to be safe. First time I killed Satan I got hit once by his unholy fire attack and was one shot, but didn't die because of the point I had in Fairy Blessing. I was lucky the second time I killed him and didnt get hit at all, but had 2 skills points saved for Fairy Blessing just in case.

-Maximise your food by healing yourself. If your belly reaches 0 don't always eat right away. If you are in no immediate danger and have spare energy, health, or mana potions let your health slowly decrease to about 50% or lower if you know its safe and then heal if you have a healing spell or with a health potion. By doing this instead of eating right away when you're hungry you can get a lot more turns in.
